La Gloria Taqueria

Day 1 - Saturday
Things are going well. Travel was easy and we had a wonderful, but spicy, dinner at the La Gloria Taqueria. We spent some time getting to know each other and settling in. The plan for tomorrow is Mass at a local church and a professional soccer game.
Here are some reflections on our experiences so far:
Compared to New Orleans, this is a lot worse: trash, stray dogs, and housing. It is shocking and unexpected, a good shock ~ Sophie
The trash and the poverty makes you think of what you have. ~Emily
I am struck by the land and scenery and how it is the same as in the US. The people on one side of the border are prospering and doing well, while people on the other side are not doing so well. ~Maria
Being back is crazy. I realize how much I forgot. The feeling in the area is the same, safe and comfortable. ~Tia
I didn't have any expectations. I had no idea about poverty to this extent. ~Kylee
This is where people live. The touristy stuff is so different than the reality of the life in Tijuana. The community is what is important about being here. ~Christine
Being here is a lot like Central America: the life, perserverence, and joy in the little things. I am happy to see the people and community here. ~Taryn

Departure
We depart this am for the fine city of SanDiego to rent vans to drive south to LaGloria, just south of Tijuana, Mexico. We travel with excitement, nervousness, and expectation of the adventures that lie ahead for us.
In a few days we will meet the family that we will be helping to build a better life. Much cement and many bucket lines loom in our future, the labor of love and compassion.
I will update this blog as often as possible, and maybe even share some pictures along the way.
